Munich: Restrictions on rail traffic are looming across Bavaria – Munich

Is there a World War II bomb in the ground near the Donnersberger Bridge? Experts from the bomb disposal service want to clarify this on Friday. Specialists have probed the ground in the construction area of ​​the second S-Bahn main line. They discovered a suspicious object three and a half meters deep west of the bridge. However, this does not currently pose any danger, the fire department said.

In December 2021, a 250-kilogram aerial bomb detonated very close to the site during drilling work on the second main line, which had remained undiscovered during the exploratory work at the time. Four people were injured, one of them very seriously.

If this time it is really an unexploded bomb, it is expected to be defused on Saturday. In this case, residents will be informed on Friday evening by a mail-out and loudspeaker vans. Due to the possible defusing, there may be severe restrictions on rail traffic from 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8th. Information on this is available at bahn.de and s-bahn-muenchen.de/aktuell.

All trains that normally travel to and from Munich will not stop at Munich Central Station during the defusing period. They will end at various stations in Munich and the surrounding area. According to Deutsche Bahn, there may also be restrictions in other parts of Bavaria because fewer trains will be able to run there. The reason for this is that DB would have to vacate its operations center for the defusing.

While regional and long-distance traffic will only be affected if the situation is actually defused, a special timetable will apply to the Munich S-Bahn on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This is how the S-Bahn runs on Saturday

During this period, there will be no S-Bahn services on the entire main line or from and to Moosach, Allach and Siemenswerke. On the western branches of the line, trains will only run every 20 to 60 minutes. On the eastern branches of the line, there will be regular services from and to Ostbahnhof and Giesing.

The S8 is the only line that runs between Ostbahnhof and Pasing without stopping via the Südring. Due to construction work, however, this is only possible until around 2 p.m. After that, the S8 also ends early in Pasing or at Ostbahnhof.

In order to best connect the S-Bahn lines that are ending early with the subway and to ensure travel options into the city center, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is setting up two replacement transport lines: These will run every ten minutes between Pasing and Laimer Platz (U5) and every 20 minutes between Allach, Untermenzing and Moosach (U3).

Given that there are more than 1,000 daily journeys, the development of the special timetable is very complex, says DB. Among other things, the S-Bahn has to completely re-plan the use of staff and vehicles. However, attempts are being made to offer individual additional journeys on the main route and in the outer areas on an ad hoc basis.

The special timetable for the Munich S-Bahn will be available in the DB information systems from Friday afternoon.
