Munich: Reiter wants a local ministry after election – Munich

Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) is calling for the new federal government to have its own local ministry to represent the interests of cities and municipalities at the federal level. It has not yet become part of federal politics that the problems and challenges of today have to be solved in the cities, said Reiter in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine.

“For this reason, I would like to have a local minister in the new federal government, because we are not adequately represented through the umbrella organizations – who are hard at work and try everything, but unfortunately have no real say,” said Reiter. There is a lot that has to be done differently.

“The responsibilities and decision-making options of the cities should be significantly strengthened,” demanded the mayor. “In Munich I can’t even regulate how high the parking fees are.” He could not understand why such questions should be settled at the federal or state level.
