Munich reading by the Bavarian book prize winner Deniz Utlu – Munich

When Yunus meets a writer for the first time at school, he can hardly believe it. “For me, someone like that belonged to higher, almost immortal beings. They were not made of flesh and blood, perhaps even not of earthly origin, their words had to do with gravity and stars, with light and darkness,” the first-person narrator thinks at the beginning by Deniz Utlu’s novel “Father’s Sea”. In any case, Utlu has long since become a writer too. And he also knows his way around light and darkness.

Utlu was recently awarded the Bavarian Book Prize in a live jury session for his novel “Father’s Sea”, which deals with the years-long farewell to an almost completely paralyzed father in poetic language. “A great souvenir book,” was the verdict of the jury. Utlu is now presenting his novel in the Seidlvilla; a good opportunity to experience the writer in Munich as a higher being and yet completely earthly.
