Munich: Protected Bike Lanes for cyclists prove their worth – Munich

Cyclists should be safer on so-called Protected Bike Lanes, i.e. structurally protected cycle lanes. In a traffic trial, the mobility department tested different separating elements on five road sections in the city for over a year. So-called guide thresholds were used in the western part of Domagkstrasse, and adhesive borders were used in the eastern part. On Brienner Straße, the city tested black and white elements called Wand-Orca, which consist of horizontal and vertical elements. On Kapuzinerstrasse there were flat curb orcas, on Plinganserstrasse they were also flat, but with raised reflectors.

The test was, among other things, about whether the elements were easily recognized by cyclists and drivers. Four of the tested variants proved to be fundamentally suitable, only the adhesive borders tested did not fare well because they have little durability and are only moderately visible.

The guide boards and especially the wall Orcas turned out to be particularly suitable for use over several years. Visibility and durability were rated very well for both elements.

According to the mobility department, the elements installed as part of the experiment will remain in place until further notice.
