Munich: Prices and balance of the Dok-Fest 2023 – Munich

The Munich Dok-Fest came to an end on Sunday, around 35,000 visitors took advantage of the offers in the cinemas and venues as well as the industry and educational events. That was almost 10,000 more than last year. According to official information, there were more film talks in 2023 than ever before (211). The 38th edition was again staged in dual form, many of the 130 documentaries from all over the world can still be streamed until May 21st: unter dokfest-muenchen.de.

In the three main competitions of the renowned festival, the films “Theatre of Violence” (doc international, 10,000 euros), “Greta’s birth” (doc German, 7,500 euros) and “Le Specter de Boko Haram” (doc horizons, 5000 euros) through. The work by Lukasz Konopa and Emil Langballe shows a former Ugandan child soldier and later commander in court and asks the question: is he the perpetrator or the victim? The German contribution by Katja Baumgarten also deals with a legal issue, with the focus on an obstetrician. “Le Specter de Boko Haram”, on the other hand, illustrates the threat posed by the terrorist militia of the same name in northern Cameroon.

The FFF Documentary Award, also endowed with 5000 euros, went to “She Chef” by Melanie Liebheit, the Megaherz Student Award (3000 euros) went to “Border Conversation” by Jonathan Brunner. Other prizes were awarded before or at the beginning of the festival. The audience award will only be announced towards the end of the online festival.
