They are already 25 years old, 13 meters high and weigh more than four tons each: The two plane trees that the city’s building department planted in the nights from Tuesday to Wednesday and from Wednesday to Thursday are a visible sign of the nearing completion of the building Sendlinger Tor Square.
In order for the exceptionally large trees from a tree nursery on the Lower Rhine to be successfully planted, a lot of technology and manpower was needed: they were transported at night using a low-loader. The trees with a trunk circumference of up to 80 centimeters were placed in the previously prepared, extra-large planting pits using a large wheel excavator and a truck crane.
Workers had previously filled these with 36 cubic meters of a special substrate that should enable good growth at the new location. The two large trees have been transplanted several times in their lives, which is also intended to promote growth. The pits can also store up to 12,000 liters of water and are intended to contribute to the self-sufficient water supply for the trees and to the implementation of the sponge city principle, even under more difficult climatic conditions in Munich.
The planting of flowering perennials and the installation of seating are now still pending. Over the past seven years, the Munich public utility company has extensively rebuilt and modernized the Sendlinger Tor subway station. The work at the station has now largely been completed.
