Munich: Planning for the expansion of the Pasing train station begins in the summer – Munich

The Pasing train station, one of the largest rail hubs in Bavaria, is being expanded for half a billion euros. Three projects are planned to make the hub fit for the future, where 1,000 trains already stop every day and which around 100,000 passengers use. For the first project, the construction of an additional platform in the north, the planning approval process is to begin in the summer.

This new platform, which will primarily be used by trains to and from Augsburg in the future, is being built between the existing tracks 12 and 14. It is to be connected to the existing underpasses without barriers via lifts and escalators. In addition, a 1340 meter long, up to four meter high noise protection wall will be erected from Offenbachstrasse to the allotment gardens west of Pippinger Strasse – to the delight of the residents and the Pasing-Obermenzing district committee.

The lower two meters of the wall will be green, the upper part will be made of glass. From a local political point of view, the wall should also be equipped with photovoltaics. But that’s not all: at least according to the state of knowledge of the citizens’ representatives, the station entrance building on the north side is also to be demolished and rebuilt about one meter in the direction of the forecourt. “This is what the leading railway employees explained to us at a video conference at the end of June,” says the chairwoman of the planning subcommittee, Maria Osterhuber-Völkl (CSU).

Pasing’s local politicians are calling for a competition to be held

In this case, Pasing’s local politicians advocate designing the new building higher than the noise protection wall, equipping it with public toilets and bicycle parking facilities and thinking of it as an “overall concept”, including the forecourt. They would find it best to launch an urban planning competition for this area. Because the new entrance offers the “chance to recompose the entrance to the station or in the direction of the August-Exter settlement”.

However, the spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn for major projects in Munich emphasizes that “neither demolition nor new construction is currently planned”. Only “renovation work on the building” was taking place. The district committee also calls for the connection to the Pasing curve to be planned with the construction of the north platform and, if possible, to be implemented “at the same time”. Deutsche Bahn currently expects to be able to put the new platform into operation when the timetable changes in December 2027.

The plans for the second project, the extension of the southern platform, have not yet progressed that far. It is already clear, however, that this platform, where only the S20 trains have stopped so far, is to be expanded to become a barrier-free central platform with two tracks. Then the regional trains to and from Fürstenfeldbruck or Buchloe can also stop there and help to smooth out train traffic.

The Westkopf Pasing should be free of crossings

However, the most complex project will be the third: the crossing-free expansion of the so-called Westkopf Pasing with numerous underpasses and overpasses. So far, the S-Bahn lines S4, S6 and S8, as well as the trains from the Allgäu and Werdenfelser Land, often have to wait at a signal before entering Pasing station. The result is delays. With the construction of bridges and tunnels, this congestion is to be resolved and the time delay thereby minimized. According to Bahn, construction for this project will start in 2030 at the earliest. The Hellihofweg along the Pasinger Fabrik cultural center was closed just a few weeks ago because of a supply tunnel for the track systems.

Unless something unforeseen happens, the construction project should be completed by the end of September. The dilapidated former caretaker’s villa of the factory will also be demolished – this work, for which some parking spaces on Wensauerplatz will be lost, is expected to end at the end of August. A new building is not planned there, the Pasing factory is developing a concept for the future use of the area. And the building on August-Exter-Straße 3, which was last used as an ice cream parlour, must also give way: a new building is being built here, construction will start between September and November, and completion is expected in early 2024.
