The “Monument Summer” has been running in the inner courtyard of the Alte Münze in Munich since the beginning of July. The reason for this is the 50th anniversary of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act, which is being celebrated with various events by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, which is based in the mint. On September 10th at 7:30 p.m. with one Concert by G. Rag & the Landlerg siblings the final.
At the same time, another birthday also takes place on the same day. Because it has also been around for 30 years Open Monument Day. Germany’s largest cultural event celebrated its birth in 1993. As a German version of the event initiated by Jack Lang in France in 1984 and then adopted by other countries “European Heritage Days“.
This year’s birthday edition has the motto “Talent Monument”. In the state office itself, the image archive, the central laboratory and the restoration workshops will be open for tours on that day. There is also a children’s program and tours starting in the inner courtyard that lead to the fountains in the old town or show the development of Munich into a residential city (exact program below www.blfd.bayern.de). Otherwise, there is a huge selection of architectural and cultural monuments throughout Bavaria that are open for visits or other events. In Munich these include various churches and Suresnes Castle, the Bellevue di Monaco or the old brickworks in Oberföhring.
In the 1960s, operations in the old Oberföhring brickworks ceased. It was preserved as an industrial monument.

Given, among other things, the repressive policies of Otto von Bismarck and his role in colonialism, the question arises: How do we as a democratic urban society deal with questionable heroes or monuments? And one could also ask who actually determines what is “memorable” and therefore worth preserving. There are quite a few listed or worthy buildings that simply disappear. Open Monument Day is also a good opportunity to think about this.
