Where many live, there are many cars, but not enough public parking spaces. More cycle paths and sidewalk cafés exacerbate the shortage of parking spaces. Is this how the cars for the traffic turnaround are to be pushed out of the city?

At first glance, it sounds like good news from an environmental point of view: With around 353 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants, Munich has the lowest private car density in Bavaria – as of the beginning of 2022. For comparison: the district of Schweinfurt has a density of 658 private cars. And yet the whole city is packed with cars, around 740,000 of which are registered in Munich. The result: Especially in densely populated areas near the city center, the so-called parking search traffic burdens the residents. And that is not least due to the fact that there are far fewer public parking spaces in the districts than parking licenses allocated by the city.
