Munich: More capacity in local public transport could relieve congestion on roads – Munich

The traffic jam on the Mittlerer Ring in the south of Munich is as much a part of rush hour as the disruption reports on the S-Bahn. The Munich city council faction of the FDP and the Bavarian Party therefore wanted to know from the mobility department whether car traffic could be reduced and the roads relieved by offering 70,000 additional places per day on public transport. The Candidtunnel/Tegernseer Landstraße and McGraw-Graben areas are particularly overloaded with car traffic.

The mobility department has now presented an estimate of how many places could be created with individual measures. If every new space were to encourage commuters to give up cars, this would actually be an enormous relief for the roads.

According to traffic planners, the planned extension of the U5 to Taufkirchen can offer up to 5,640 additional seats per hour and direction south of Neuperlach Süd train station with a ten-minute frequency. With 18 hours of operation, this corresponds to an increase of 203,040 places. If the frequency of the U5 north of Neuperlach Süd were increased to three trips per ten minutes during rush hour, this would provide 67,680 places per day.

If the U1 to Mangfallplatz were to be condensed to a five-minute frequency during rush hour, this would correspond to 67,680 additional spaces per day. If you run them every five minutes all day, you would even get 169,200 places.

According to the mobility department, the double-track expansion of the S7 S-Bahn line between Giesing and Kreuzstrasse would also provide 2,176 seats per hour, and even 39,168 additional seats every day.

The U5 extension and the expansion of the S7 can only be implemented in the long term. The projects form a local interface in Neuperlach Süd with the planned construction of the new subway depot of the Munich Transport Company (MVG). A feasibility study commissioned by the MVG, the Munich district and the Free State will clarify how the individual measures do not hinder each other.

The measures mentioned will not provide quick relief. Because there is no schedule. MVG is only aiming to open the subway depot in 2030.
