Under the title “Mourning on the Side of Israel”, the Israelite Cultural Community (IKG) is holding a memorial event on Munich’s Jakobsplatz next to the synagogue. Starts at 6:30 p.m.
At least 500 participants are expected, and prominent speakers have also announced themselves: In addition to Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Israelite Community, and Talya Lador-Fresher, Consul General of the State of Israel for Southern Germany, among others, Prime Minister Markus Söder, Mayor Dieter Reiter and Reinhard Cardinal Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, and Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, announced their coming. The IKG is the largest Jewish community in Germany with currently around 9,500 members. Last Saturday marked a deep turning point for the State of Israel and everyone who carries it in their hearts, it said in a statement. “The nightmarish images of Hamas attacks and reports of Israelis being murdered or kidnapped in Gaza have deeply affected many people in our country, including members of our community. Many of us have friends or relatives in Israel whose Pain these days is also our pain.”
