It was no secret that he would like to run for election again, now Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has officially confirmed his willingness: “As far as I’m concerned, it’s my declared wish to run again – if I’m still fit, mine Family supports it and my party puts me back together,” emphasized Reiter on Thursday to the German Press Agency. “In the end, however, the Munich voters decide who they want to see in this office. And there are still three years until the next local elections.”
Reiter had already indicated his basic willingness on the sidelines of an appointment at the request of the Picture– newspaper explained. In an interview with the SZ a few weeks ago, Reiter had already indicated that he was aiming for a third term. It has long been known that the social democrat can well imagine spending more years in the town hall on Marienplatz. But until a few weeks ago, a state law prevented this plan. On March 7, however, the Bavarian cabinet overturned the age limit for local politicians who were previously not allowed to have reached the age of 67 when taking office.
Reiter will be 68 years old in the expected 2026 election year. The Greens had already suspected that the mayor would be reluctant to criticize Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) because of the debacle on the main route, because in return he had hoped for the age limit to be lifted – which Reiter dismissed: “It can be just a carnival joke.”
