Of course, an economics minister does not want to miss the opening of a place that wants to become “one of the most modern start-up centers in Germany”. And so Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) personally laid the foundation stone for the new Plant 1.4 in the Werksviertel on Thursday afternoon. Together with Plant 1, which has existed since 2012, the expansion is intended to offer start-ups from all over the world an attractive working atmosphere and thus advance Munich as a location in the competition between international economic centers for tech companies. Because the Werksviertel is primarily intended for companies that focus on digitization.

In the already existing Plant 1, the intention to bind international start-ups to the state capital in the long term seems to be working. “82 percent of Werk 1 start-ups are still active in Munich today,” says Managing Director Florian Mann. The offices in the Werksviertel are subsidized by the state, which is why the main focus is primarily on young founders who are supported by the Free State with various sponsorship and mentoring programs in realizing their business ideas.

So far, 40 companies have settled in Plant 1; the expansion is intended to create office space and apartments for business people in order to save them long commutes. The goals are high, explains Mann: “We expect Plant 1.4 to be a milestone in innovation.” The new area is to be completed in 2023. And maybe the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs will drop by again. Because not everyone should feel comfortable in the business environment. But Hubert Aiwanger actually has to – purely for professional reasons.
