Munich invests billions in housing – there is hardly any sign of it – Munich

Rents are exploding, new construction is collapsing: Because the federal government and the Free State are looking the other way, the town hall government made up of the Greens and the SPD is doing a lot – but a lot of it is wasting away.

“We are creating new, urgently needed, permanently affordable housing.” This is how the second sentence begins in the first chapter of the coalition agreement between the Social Democrats and the Greens. You can’t position a political issue more prominently, and you can assume that this was done very consciously. Ultimately, the SPD sees itself as “the” tenants’ party in the city and sees socially acceptable housing as a central mission. The Greens, on the other hand, would like to be the even better tenant and housing party, not always to the delight of their coalition partner.
