Munich: Interactive map provides an overview of the school construction program – Munich

A new offer from the city shows parents, children and local residents where new schools are being built, what construction work is planned at which school and when it should be completed. The information from the school building programs is presented on an interactive map. They should be updated with every new decision by the city council.

Representatives of the city of Munich never tire of emphasizing that the city is managing the largest municipal school construction program in Germany: Munich is investing more than seven billion euros in over 100 construction projects, creating 57,800 school places in 120 schools, 191 sports halls, 79 canteens and twelve swimming pools. In December, the fourth building program was approved by the city council, with more to follow.

If you want to get an impression of how extensive this school building program is, the new digital map will show you that. Under muenchen.de/schulbaukarte everyone can be shown where an existing school is being built, where a new elementary school is being built, where a new grammar school is being built. Anyone who displays all measures, planned and under construction, receives a Munich map full of colorful symbols: red, green, blue, purple and turquoise houses spread all over the city.

If you click on one of the houses, you will find out, for example, that a new extension is planned for the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg because the school is to have six classes; a sports hall and a swimming pool are also planned, as well as a canteen and an underground car park. All this should be completed in 2027-2028. It can also be read that a photovoltaic system is to be installed on the building.

The children of the elementary school at Strehleranger in Ramersdorf-Perlach don’t have to wait that long anymore, the new building of their school should be finished this year: six-row, in the learning house concept, including triple sports hall with grandstand, running track and all-weather fields. The new Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium is also scheduled to move into the new location at Gmunder Straße 39 this year. The aerial photo that can be displayed on the interactive map and that shows a large construction site is a little deceptive – it dates from 2021.

Parents whose child starts school in the fall can also use the map to plan their way to school. The elementary school districts are registered as well as the middle school districts. You can also see at which crossings there are traffic lights, where there are 30 km/h zones and bicycle lanes, where signposted cycle routes are and where children walk to school together on defined paths and at certain times; The city’s project is called the bus with feet.

School construction program: Lots of information, not just about construction sites: Munich's school landscape can be explored on the map.

The intersections and crossings where school helpers accompany elementary school children across the street can also be displayed. A green symbolic man with a trowel lights up there. In Waldperlach or around the Haderner Stern, for example, many green helper symbols with trowels light up, in Neuperlach or in Lehel several helpers are missing, the symbols light up red. However, the data is from 2020 – it is quite possible that something has changed since then. A spokesman for the education department said the data in the map was the most up-to-date available.

The map could also be interesting for parents and children who are planning to change schools: you can see which school is located where in Munich – regardless of whether construction work is planned there or not. Which secondary school is the next? Is there construction work going on at the high school my daughter is supposed to switch to? And when will the new elementary school for the siblings be ready?

A billion-euro school building program was started in 2016

The city started its extensive school building program in February 2016, initially with 39 projects for a total of 1.5 billion euros. At that time, the focus was on elementary schools. The following year, in July 2017, the second school construction program was approved: 38 construction projects for 2.4 billion euros. This time the focus was on secondary schools and vocational schools.

The third school construction program with 30 projects for 2.5 billion euros followed in November 2019. During the pandemic, savings should then be made: construction measures were postponed and completed later than originally planned. The fourth program is the smallest to date: in December 2022, the city council approved eight school construction projects for 668 million euros.
