Older people who experienced the Second World War themselves are stunned by the terrible images of the war in Ukraine. But they are not afraid for themselves – at least for their grandchildren.
When the planes arrive, Annemarie Schneider is kneeling on the floor of the air-raid shelter and trembling all over. The night bombardment lasted about 20 minutes, during which 236 aircraft dropped more than 1,000 tons of bombs, including 300,000 incendiary bombs. Even after 77 years, the 93-year-old still remembers the horrors of the Second World War. Hardly anything remains that bears witness to that time. “We were just bombed out in March 1945,” she says. Her parents’ house burned down completely. “I forgot a lot.” But when she watches the news, the terrible pictures from Ukraine not only bring back her own memories, but also the feeling of being threatened: “They can shoot at Munich from Russia.”
