Munich: How the state parliament is looking for apartments for MPs – Bavaria

Apparently, those who go looking for the overheated Munich housing market like to advertise with the argument: I’m practically never at home anyway! An uncomplicated tenant, always on the move. At least that’s what you notice when browsing through advertisements on the internet. For example, a “sporty couple” who would like to have a three-room apartment emphasizes: “We spend as much of our free time as possible in nature with various sports equipment under our feet.” A manager suggests that she is almost constantly on a business trip.

The ideal type of the seldom-there resident – beware of landlords! – but if they had to be members of parliament, he or she must not miss a party, handing over a check or breaking ground in the constituency. And session weeks consist of plenum, committees and parliamentary group meetings. With a little sleep or a shower in between, okay.

In this respect, a “rental request for 15 apartments” catches the eye these days, for members of the Bavarian state parliament: “Combined living/working room with separate wet cell (shower, toilet, washbasin) and kitchenette (2 hotplates, sink, refrigerator, wall cabinet)” – please walk to work, one kilometer radius around the Maximilianeum. There is also a cost limit, based on the rent index of the state capital. Sounds sporty, even without sports equipment on your feet.

The state parliament office explains what is behind it when asked by the SZ. There is no right for MPs to be allocated an apartment, and not all wishes can be fulfilled at the moment. The factions have to figure out the distribution of “the limited available” units themselves, for example the distance to home can be relevant. Anyone who then becomes a subtenant of the state parliament pays for it themselves; but you can deduct an office part of the booth.

What is striking is the desired start of the lease, in October. Like the Bundestag, the state parliament is also threatening to continue to swell. There are already 205 MPs due to overhang and compensation mandates. At a target strength of 180. The FDP recently mobilized against the “XXL state parliament”. However, the state parliament office makes it clear that the advertisement is “deliberately” not an increase in capacity, but that replacement accommodation is needed, among other things, because of renovations and the loss of apartments. “The stock of properties must be sufficient”, bottlenecks would have to be compensated for if necessary by working from home or clever working models – even if the state parliament were to continue to grow after October 8th. And it remains to be seen whether 15 economically reasonable leases for apartments will come about “at all”. In other words, politicians sometimes have the concerns of ordinary citizens.
