The volcanologist Ulrich Küppers flew to La Palma a few days ago with two colleagues and 17 students from the Department of Geosciences and Environmental Sciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich to study volcanic deposits as part of a student excursion. This year they have the rare opportunity to explore the Cumbre Vieja (“old peak”) in action. The volcano has been spewing out huge amounts of glowing lava for three weeks.
