Munich: Gentrification reaches the Hasenbergl – City Council decides on tenant protection – Munich

Rents have risen dramatically in what was once a hotspot district, and the town hall fears real estate speculation – and has decided to use the instrument of conservation statutes to provide more protection for thousands of tenants. Two other quarters go away empty-handed. Why?

When you think of gentrification, you usually think of Wilhelminian style districts. But the displacement of tenants with low incomes has long since reached the outskirts of the city, even areas that were once considered social hotspots. The Left/The Party faction has therefore applied for environmental protection for three residential areas in the north of Munich, and for one of them – in the middle of Hasenbergl – it found a majority in the planning committee on Wednesday.
