Munich: Forstenrieder Park swimming pool is demolished and rebuilt – Munich

The municipal indoor swimming pool Forstenrieder Park – also known as Stäblibad – and the swimmers have a lot to do: the Munich public utility company (SWM) has announced that it will demolish its “sporty district pool” and rebuild it in a different location. Beforehand, the SWM want to start a survey among the visitors in order to gather their wishes and suggestions. The plans have met with approval from swimming clubs and local politicians. Because they mark the end of a series of partial renovations and repairs that had caused plenty of annoyance in recent years.

The swimming pool with sauna, sunbathing lawn and sun terrace, located on Stäblistraße in the Forstenried district, was opened in 1976 and thoroughly renovated in 2002/2003. Over time, however, the structural problems increased. Sometimes the roof leaked, sometimes mold appeared in the sauna, then again the Finnish sauna had to be closed due to water damage. The Corona period also disrupted the operation of the popular sports and leisure facility. Last but not least, the public utilities themselves classified the Stäblibad as in need of renovation.

SWM want to start with the concrete planning for the new pool before the end of this year. According to the current status, implementation should begin in 2025 at the latest. Completion is expected in 2027. According to SWM, there is no cost calculation yet. During the construction period, bathers could switch to the south pool, the west pool and, in summer, to the Maria Einsiedel outdoor pool in Thalkirchen. The employees of the Stäblibad are to be temporarily deployed to other municipal facilities.

The Stäblibad, once built at the request of the population in the south of Munich, is not least known for its loyal audience. Seniors from the entire district meet here for aqua aerobics, while clubs and rescue organizations train in the 25-meter sports pool. Hundreds of schoolchildren learned to swim on Stäblistrasse. The smaller pools serve as a meeting place for parents and children. The range of services also includes massages and a small coffee bar. A bus stop nearby and a huge car park guarantee easy accessibility.

If there are still wishes, the municipal utilities want to find out about them. To do this, SWM is contacting visitors online and putting out postcards in shops, restaurants and hairdressers: “The distribution will take place at around 100 locations.” Citizens from the south of Munich are now called upon to ride the wave of creative bathroom renovation.
