Munich: fire brigade frees squirrels from gutter – Munich

Dramatic rescue operation: Two squirrels slide down the gutter into an underground car park – and squeak at their mother, who is staying on the roof. The fire brigade can bring the family together after two and a half hours of action.

Two little squirrels slipped down the downspout of a rain gutter in Munich and were freed by the fire brigade. A witness had heard the calls of a squirrel on the roof of a house and at the same time a squeaking from the pipe on Wednesday morning and called the fire brigade. The mother animal stayed up on the roof, the boys fevered below, and both could no longer find each other, as the fire brigade reports.

The helpers managed to locate the beeping in the building’s underground car park. The emergency services had to dismantle several meters of pipeline to get to the young animals. They were then able to capture the cute four-legged friends from the suborder of the squirrel relatives and take them outside in an animal capture box.

The rodents, known for their bushy tails, were released in the garden and climbed the nearest tree, reports the fire department. The statement said the mother and cubs kept calling each other to unite. A short time later, both the young animals and the mother were no longer to be seen. The fire brigade captured this moment on video and for posterity documented on social media. “We assume a happy reunion of the animals,” said the fire brigade. The operation lasted two and a half hours.

The fire brigade recently rescued three squirrel babies in Fürstenried and placed them in the care of the squirrel protection association. The Munich association has been helping squirrels in need since 2010. “We don’t look away, we rescue, raise, take care of injured animals, take care of their release or accompany them on their last journey,” he says association on its website his work.

Elsewhere, too, the little friends of beechnuts and hazelnuts are making the headlines with their mishaps these days: In Dortmund, the fire brigade had to rescue a representative of these otherwise nimble animals on Easter Monday, who was stuck in a manhole cover and was no longer able to take care of himself to free.
