Munich: Extension of the U5 will be significantly more expensive – Munich

The extension of subway line 5 to Pasing will be significantly more expensive. This is the result of the latest calculations from the building department. Nevertheless, the building committee approved the implementation on Tuesday. Overall, the construction is now expected to well exceed the billion mark – according to current status, the costs are around 1.3 billion euros. The project was most recently estimated at 988 million euros.

But according to the construction department, the construction price index rose by almost 18 percent in 2023 compared to 2021. That would be around 178 million euros. In addition, there are price developments for tunnel construction that are not reflected in the construction price indices. That’s another 147 million on top.

According to the construction department, the costs include a risk reserve of around 120 million euros for “unforeseen events,” as the template states. The authority does not rule out the possibility that it may become even more expensive.

The building department cannot currently say how much more expensive. “In view of the long project duration, it can be assumed that future index or market price changes may require further updates of the total project costs,” the template states.

The committee also approved the construction of the shell for a future subway station in Freiham, costing 94 million euros. Andreas Barth from the Pro Bahn passenger association is critical of the U-5 extension. He refers to the savings list recently presented to the supervisory board by the Munich transport company. According to Andreas Barth, this “clear-cutting list” is delaying many important measures for the transport transition, which overall would bring far more benefits. This includes the expansion of the subway and tram fleets as well as new depots.
