Munich: Expensive times for parking offenders – Munich

Since Tuesday, the speed and parking offenders have to pay significantly more for offenses. Unauthorized parking in particular has even “paid off” for many drivers in some places, since the catalog of fines did not include a penalty for unauthorized parking in a parking space reserved for e-vehicles or car sharing cars, but now 55 euros have to be paid for.

Parking in a bus lane or in a bus stop now costs up to 100 euros (previously 35), parking or stopping in the second row is now 55 euros expensive. The fine for parking in the no-stopping zone increases from 15 to at least 35 euros and becomes more expensive if someone is handicapped. What should be of interest to many cyclists in Munich in particular: Parking on cycle paths is now punished with at least 55 euros.

The municipal traffic control (KVÜ) has been responsible for the control of stationary traffic since 1988. The KVÜ monitors the great majority of the parking management areas within the middle ring and the first construction phases in the new development area Riem. The police are responsible for the rest of the city outside of the Mittlerer Ring.

If you only look at the urban figures, parking monitoring has always been a losing business up to now. In 2019, for example, the total costs in Munich were 15.55 million euros and the total revenues were 9.27 million euros. 2020 is a rather bad year in comparison, as no parking tickets were handed out during the lockdowns for simple parking violations without disabilities.

Overall, the number of parking violations is falling. The district administration department (KVR) counted a total of 636 435 violations in 2017, in 2018 it was 607 234 tickets, in 2019 it was 574 941. In 2020 the city issued 476 802 traffic tickets. It is difficult to say whether the KVÜ will bring the city more money. According to the KVR, the new warning and fines should have a “lasting educational effect” on proper parking. Nevertheless, additional proceeds can be assumed.

In the center of the city in particular, parking is often wrong. According to KVR, the traffic monitors are busy in all areas. They keep an eye on cycle paths and protective lanes, e-charging stations and parking spaces for the disabled.
