Munich: Criticism of the city’s school building program – Munich

The district committee (BA) Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln has considerable doubts about the city’s school and daycare construction program. In a statement on the status report of the “School Construction Campaign 2013-2030”, the district committee expressed the fear that the demand for grammar schools and secondary schools in particular could be too low. In this context, reference is made to “the new development areas that will be built in the next few years” in the city district.

Cost-related savings considerations for the new buildings at the primary and secondary school locations on Königswieser Strasse and Zielstattstrasse are also criticized. The number of class trains there should be reduced. Polina Gordienko (SPD), chairwoman of the BA subcommittee on social affairs, education and sport, commented on the school building program as follows: “In view of the continuing influx, it is not sustainable.” And the planned savings are “worrying”.

The debate also raised concerns as to whether the program could actually be implemented as planned. This is not least due to larger castling that the education department has in mind. For example, the Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium is to move to the newly built grammar school on Gmunder Strasse so that its building on Drygalski-Allee can be renovated. Similar plans exist for the elementary and middle school on Zielstattstraße, which could be relocated to the new building on Boschetsrieder Straße during a comprehensive renovation.

According to the citizens’ representatives, “particular emphasis should be placed on securing places at secondary schools”. The BA misses “current information”, for example about the planned Realschule location on Forstenrieder Allee. Due to traffic problems, this location is only an “emergency solution” anyway. Apart from that, a single new secondary school in the district is not enough, because there is a glaring shortage of this type of school in the south of Munich.

In addition to the statement on the draft of the “school building offensive”, the BA unanimously followed a motion by the CSU parliamentary group to demand the establishment of an additional grammar school. It should be created “as soon as possible” at the Drygalski-Allee location.
