Munich: commemorative bike tour for the victims of the Olympic attack – Munich

It has been almost 50 years since the Olympic Games took place in Munich. Some anniversaries are a reason for carefree, thoughtless celebrations – this is not. For many, the 1972 Olympics were initially a peaceful festival of peoples and sports, in the middle of the spectacular architecture of the new Olympic Park. When Palestinian terrorists attacked the Israeli team’s quarters on September 5, 1972, the ease of the games came to an abrupt end. Eleven Israeli athletes and a German policeman lost their lives that day, shot by the assassins.

To commemorate the victims of the attack, the Israeli Consulate General in Munich has found a special form of remembrance: “The Consulate General has chosen to commemorate this tragedy in the way that was central to the lives of the athletes – doing sports.” , said Israeli Consul General Carmela Shamir.

The consulate is therefore organizing a commemorative bicycle tour together with the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) in Munich. The tour is to lead from the Olympic Park to the air base in Fürstenfeldbruck – and will take place on the morning of September 4th. Two to three hours are planned for the route, the tour will be suitable for all ages. Further information and the possibility to register will be available on the ADFC Munich website in the coming weeks.

Several well-known personalities support the tour and have announced that they will take part, including the mayor of Munich, Katrin Habenschaden (Greens) and the cabaret artist Christian Springer.
