With all the rumblings about Till Lindemann and Rammsteins Munich concerts are quickly forgotten about smaller and quieter events – such as this year’s “summer in the courtyard”. From June 16 to August 6, the culture festival in the courtyard of the Munich City Museum offers concerts, puppet theater and films with well-known artists at a low price and embedded in the thematic framework “Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights – 175 Years of the German Revolution”. International acts like the Israeli singer Liraz (June 26), whose songs became the anthems of the Iranian uprising, will be featured, as will well-known figures from the region, including the traditional Munich world music band embryo (3rd August).
The 2021 summer festival was “born out of the Corona emergency, so to speak”, as Miriam Noa, head of the museum’s music department and festival program manager, describes it: “You couldn’t do concerts inside at the time. But after initial skepticism, I realized that the larger of the two inner courtyards of our museum has really great acoustics.” So you could offer something to the public in the time when there were few events.
After the “summer in the yard” took place on a smaller scale last year, according to Noa, there should now be a “brilliant conclusion”. This is before the city museum closes its doors for six years at the beginning of 2024 as part of a general renovation. The choice of the main topic “175 years of the 1848 revolution” was “a matter close to the heart” for Noa. Especially against the background of the Ukraine war and anti-democratic tendencies “also in our country” it is more important than ever to remember the values that were fought for at that time.
The choice of program should subtly reflect democratic values - above all diversity. Among the musicians, women are in the majority: in addition to those already mentioned Liraz and the soul pop singer Ami Warning, who won the “German Music Author Prize” in 2022 and who will open the festival together with her father on June 16, there would also be the jazz singer who became known through “The Voice of Germany”. Tuija Komi (July 2nd) and Sandra Kreisler (July 1st), chanson singer and daughter of the Austrian singer-songwriter Georg Kreisler. In addition, the musicians vary in age, origin and musical style. With Serdar Keskin, an experienced political singer-songwriter from Turkey will take the stage on August 2nd. On June 30, the tenor Jochen Kraus puts you in a recital of Heine songs in the time close to the German revolution.

But there is not only music to see. Puppet theater pieces for the little ones have also been included in the programme: on the afternoon of June 17th, puppeteer Tina Hagemann will be performing Astrid Lindgren’s “There are no robbers in the forest”. The slightly older children will also get their money’s worth on the following Sunday with a puppet theater version of “Die rote Zora”. And those who still like puppets as an adult can watch “Das Beil” on Saturday evening, an “intermedia cabaret” about the fictional Slovenian folk hero Martin Krpan. However, the Munich City Museum’s in-house collection of dolls is not used – for “conservation reasons,” explains Noa.
Film is represented as the third medium. Silent and sound films from the first half of the 20th century will be shown throughout July, mostly German and American productions.
