Munich: City Council supports application for World Athletics Championships – Munich

The three largest factions in the Munich city council are advocating across party lines for the state capital to apply for the World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031. The Department for Education and Sport was asked to explain the necessary steps and necessary costs, as stated in a joint statement on Monday.

The title fights are to take place in the Olympic Stadium, which will soon be renovated and completely closed for around 20 months from October 2025. It is scheduled to reopen in summer 2027. Beppo Brem, sports policy spokesman for the town hall faction of the Greens and the Pink List, considers an Athletics World Championships to be “a wonderful opportunity to once again present the unique atmosphere of the Olympic Park to the world public after the renovation has been completed.”

His colleague Kathrin Abele from the SPD/Volt parliamentary group recalled the mood that recently developed at the European Championships 2022, the bundling of European championships in nine sports: “We want to repeat that at the World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031, then in the renovated Olympic Stadium.” The CSU/FW parliamentary group also “expressly supports the application,” as its sports expert Ulrike Grimm said.
