Munich: City clears out sleeping places for homeless people at Stachus – Munich

The city of Munich is clearing out homeless people’s sleeping quarters at Stachus. Twelve people have been sitting there in front of the former Galeria Kaufhof building for a long time, as the city reports. It goes on to say that these are mostly homeless beggars who are aware of all offers of homeless assistance, but who reject them and only occasionally use the overnight shelter in individual cases. The eviction was ordered on Friday.

“We are trying to settle the situation humanely, because these people come to us out of great need,” says Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) about the upcoming eviction. “But that doesn’t mean they can simply ignore our offers of help and set up camp somewhere.” If advice and accommodation offers are not accepted, evictions are the last resort, according to Reiter.

The last evacuation of the sleeping quarters in front of the former Galeria Kaufhof took place in October of this year, but people then settled there again. People are also currently sleeping in the area of the former Karstadt on Schützenstrasse. Therefore, contact will be made with the owner and an eviction will be arranged as soon as possible.
