Munich city center: City is thinking about underground bicycle garages – Munich

In the recent past, numerous public parking spaces for bicycles have been created in Munich. But in the city center, the existing bicycle parking spaces are often already overcrowded, for example the covered parking area on Landschaftstrasse near Marienhof. An underground bicycle garage could be built in almost the same place. The city wants to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether this is possible. The city council will discuss this on Wednesday.

From the administration’s point of view, the Marienhof location would have a number of advantages: It is not only located directly at the intersection of the central pedestrian zones and near several large squares, but also on one of the two main routes for cycling in an east-west direction, which runs via Promenadeplatz, Schrammerstrasse, Hofgraben and Falkenturmstrasse to Maximilianstrasse. In addition, all S-Bahn lines intersect with the U3 and U6 at nearby Marienplatz.

Deutsche Bahn, which is currently building the Marienhof S-Bahn station, has nothing against it in principle. Outside the future train station, there is basically an area of around 660 square meters available in the Dienerstrasse/Landschaftstrasse intersection next to the station structure, which could potentially be considered. However, direct integration into the future Marienhof traffic station is not technically possible and would also require another change to the plan.

The mobility department has identified a need for 520 bicycle parking spaces on the south side of Marienhof. There are already 290, 124 of which are covered. This leaves a need for 230 new parking spaces.
