Munich: Chamber of Crafts rejects Park in the Sonnenstrasse – Munich

The Federal Nature Conservation Union’s initiative to build a park on Sonnenstrasse has met with criticism. The Chamber of Commerce fears that artisans will find it more difficult to drive to the city center by car.

The idea of the Bund Naturschutz (BN) to build a park on Sonnenstraße is not well received everywhere. The Chamber of Crafts describes the proposal as half-baked and one-sidedly burdensome for commercial transactions.

“With a park around part of the old town, for example, the Hackenviertel would be completely cut off from traffic – with the corresponding consequences for our craft businesses, which are already finding it extremely difficult to drive into the city center to deliver and work there.” says Chamber of Commerce President Franz Xaver Peteranderl. He thinks it is wrong “in view of the tense situation to tie a project to your leg that will cost millions of euros and the effect of which is likely to be reflected primarily in a lack of security of supply in the city center”.

On Tuesday, the BN presented the vision of a green boulevard between Sendlinger Tor and Maximiliansplatz under the working title “Munich Central Park”. For motorists, only one lane would be left in each direction on this section of the Altstadtring. While the SPD and the Greens support the idea, the CSU also rejects it.
