Munich: Building permit for Westtangente tram is available – Munich

More than 30 years after the first decisions, the building permit for the Westtangente Tram has been available since this Monday. The 8.3-kilometer route is intended to connect Romanplatz in Nymphenburg with Aidenbachstrasse in Obersendling. In total, it leads through five districts.

The groundbreaking is already planned for early 2024. Information events are planned beforehand. The route is then to be realized in several sections. The first part between Agnes-Bernauer-Strasse and Ammerseestrasse is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025. This enables a route from Pasing to Gondrellplatz.

In the second half of 2026, Stadtwerke (SWM) wants to expand the route to the north and complete the section between Romanplatz and Agnes-Bernauer-Straße. But SWM is not alone in this. Deutsche Bahn, which is building the so-called environmental network tube at the Laimer underpass on behalf of the city, must hand it over to SWM in good time for expansion. In the future, this underpass will be shared by public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

By the end of 2027, the route is to be extended to the south and run between Ammerseestraße and a temporary turning loop at Ratzingerplatz. This date in turn depends on the timely completion of the bridge over the A96 and the overpass of the A95 over Boschetsrieder Straße.

The last section between Ratzingerplatz and Aidenbachstraße is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2028. In total, the construction of the route will cost around 490 million euros. SWM intends to apply for federal funding in the near future.
