Betiel Berhe was right, she had foreseen it. One day after the conversation with her, the editors talk about the “Black Author”. The author is unconsciously called that. Why? Berhe had already anticipated the explanation for this: “Because it’s difficult for people to talk about someone with a migrant background without describing them. Because what doesn’t conform to the norm has to be described. Whether it’s relevant or not.” Marking someone as black is important to the “dominant society”. It is the society into which Berhe was born, whose language she speaks more precisely than many others, whose codes she knows, in which she stands out phenotypically because her parents are from Eritrea. This society wants to change them.
