The Bavarian state capital Munich is banning climate protests in which demonstrators stick to the streets until the beginning of next year. This serves the purpose of “preventive averting danger”.
Bavaria’s state capital Munich has banned climate sticker protests in its city for four weeks. The ban will become general decree The city’s press and information office said on Friday that it was imposed as a preventive measure to avert danger and will apply from December 10th to January 8th. It applies to all assemblies “at which participants connect firmly to the roadway or in another way, unless the statutory obligation to notify is complied with”.
If the constitutional obligation to notify is not complied with, the City of Munich restricts further climate protests by general decree.
The ban extends to “all roads that are particularly critical for rescue operations and hazard prevention measures, as well as all areas of the federal motorways, including motorway sign bridges,” the statement said. Both organizing and participating in such meetings and protest actions are therefore prohibited. The call to participate in a prohibited meeting is also punishable.
Munich: Restriction of the right of assembly is considered “necessary”.
“The ban issued with the general decree serves to ensure that the main routes of the emergency and rescue vehicles in the city area are kept clear at all times and to avert possible damage to life and limb that could arise due to delays in emergency trips,” the statement said.
The district administration department considers – in coordination with the Munich police headquarters – the associated restriction of the right of assembly “due to the experiences of the last few days as necessary”. After the recent actions, the assembly authority and the Munich police headquarters tried to “give the high value of freedom of assembly and freedom of expression an appropriate space” and at the same time implement the requirements of security through appropriate conditions, it said. The city’s statement alleges that the activists “completely disregarded” regulations and “explicitly rejected any communication with the authorities”.
After a break of a good week, activists of the “Last Generation” resumed their climate protests on Monday, focusing in particular on Munich. Since Monday there have been various blockades both in the inner city area of Munich and on the freeways in the city area, each of which has caused significant traffic disruptions. According to their own statements, the activists want to draw attention to the urgent problem of climate change with their actions.
