Munich band of the week: Yellow – Munich

Lea Urban, a native of Munich, wanted to become an actress in the 6th grade. Lea consistently pursued what remained a childhood dream for many – she trained at drama school, then played theater in Fürth and traveled all over Germany for a musical tour. Lea was also later seen on Bavarian television, for example on “Dahoam is Dahoam”. Then she took the big step, traveled to Los Angeles for acting workshops and got a taste of Hollywood air. After a few months, Lea knew: Munich is her home. She came back full of motivation – shortly afterwards Corona brought the whole of Germany to a standstill.

A turning point for many people. Also for Lea, who was 25 at the time. But this collective break also meant a chance to gather strength and creative energy. While others baked banana bread or went jogging, Lea was drawn to music: “My friend, who also has an acting background, wrote and sang. And I thought to myself: What’s wrong with me trying it too?”

Lea Urban, who now calls herself Yellow as a singer, is now completely dedicated to music. “You can’t go 100 percent in every artistic direction, there’s always something left behind. That’s why I chose music now.” The passionate actress became a passionate singer, and Lea also models.

She got her penchant for the arts from her family. Lea learned to play the piano at an early age and received singing lessons. Her mother sang in a band and as a solo singer and also modeled. “Her old CDs were hanging at home,” says Lea. She initially wrote many texts in English and accompanied herself on the piano until she finally tried a text in German. “It was a much better fit. My voice is completely different and I can express myself better – even though I grew up almost exclusively with English-language music.” Singles like “Automat”, “Oasen aus Beton” and “Broken Heart” were created, pop songs that put you in a good mood and are accompanied by danceable house beats.

Choosing her stage name Yellow was easy: Lea’s favorite color has always been yellow. And “yellow” also goes well with her music: “Yellow means: creativity, optimism, sunshine, summer. Everything that my songs represent for me. Simply good vibes.”

Her inspirations include Schmyt, Majan and Levin Liam. “Since I’ve been writing in German, I’ve been listening to a lot more German music.” Her texts are approachable and scenic, “so that a film plays out in your head.” They cover summer, time with friends, time with lovers, but also heartbreak. But always calm, relaxed and optimistic. Yellow’s goal for the coming period: release even more music and, above all, gain live experience. And initially independent of record companies. “As long as I’m independent, I can do whatever I want.”
