Munich allows the use of road salt again due to slippery conditions – Reiter criticizes the city council – Munich

In Munich, road salt will be used again on sidewalks and cycle paths until the end of January due to the persistent slippery conditions. Up to and including January 31st, municipal street cleaners and residents can use sodium chloride to keep the paths free of ice, Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) announced on Thursday morning. The low temperatures in the past few days have created dangerous areas of black ice, some of which can only be removed with road salt, says Reiter: “The safety of the citizens comes first here!”

He had already allowed the use of road salt in December after the severe onset of winter, which also slowed down public transport for days. In his press release, Reiter criticized the city council: His renewed urgent order could have been avoided if the committee had generally approved the use of road salt in individual cases. But “that wasn’t the intention until now.” In Munich, split is usually used in winter. Road salt is banned because it causes environmental problems.
