Munich: A portrait of the Ukrainian author Natalia Vorozhbyt – Munich

When Natalia Vorozhbyt was a guest at the Munich Kammerspiele for the first time, the heavy Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was still to come. Even then, it was actually too late to ask why this literary voice from the Ukraine had not been recognized more decisively. That was in December 2021, four years after the author submitted her play Bad Roads, commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre. A bitter, precise, black humorous examination of the Russian invasion of Crimea and its consequences. Anyone who has read the play, seen the film she made about it, or attended a production will never let go of the subject. Her art is of dark, elegant, intelligent power. In the face of war, she says today, she often loses faith that she can make a difference with it. And yet, luckily, she keeps going.
