A 75-year-old man died in a fire in an apartment building in Munich-Obersendling on Sunday afternoon. Several neighbors noticed that smoke was coming from one of the apartments and alerted the fire brigade and the police at around 5:20 p.m.
According to the fire brigade, thick black smoke was already coming out of several broken windows on the fourth floor of the house when the emergency services arrived there. After their arrival, the firefighters started fighting the fire using a turntable ladder and several respiratory protection teams via the stairwell. However, any help came too late for the resident. He could only be recovered dead. It has not yet been clarified whether the man died of smoke inhalation or burned to death.
According to the fire department, the fire itself was extinguished after about an hour. However, the subsequent extinguishing work was very time-consuming: the thermal insulation composite system of the outer facade had to be opened piece by piece to ensure that there were no more embers in it. The roof skin was also extensively checked. All adjacent apartments were opened and checked by the emergency services.
