A 16-year-old man set fire to the whole kitchen while trying to heat up French fries on Tuesday afternoon. The teenager was home alone in an apartment building in Moosach when he heated oil in a pan to make fries. He obviously took his eyes off the pan for a little too long, at least it started to smoke. The teenager fled the apartment and turned to a neighbor: According to the police and fire brigade, she tried to help with a bucket of water, which of course fueled the grease fire even more.
The fire brigade, who were called immediately, quickly got the full fire in the kitchen under control, but could not prevent the rest of the apartment from being affected and being uninhabitable for the time being. The police estimated the damage at 150,000 euros. Nobody got hurt. In this context, the police point out never to fight a fat fire with water: when it comes into contact with heated fat, the water suddenly evaporates, which can lead to an explosion.
