Munich: 150 people at pro-Palestinian vigil – Munich

Unlike in other cities, there were only isolated, smaller and all peaceful actions in Munich over the weekend in connection with the war in the Middle East. The district administration department (KVR) had already banned a pro-Palestinian motorcade announced by the radical network “Samidoun” for Saturday afternoon by issuing a general decree on Friday.

According to the police, there were only a low double-digit number of vehicles on Saturday that had a Palestine scarf or a flag on them. These were checked in each case and most drivers showed understanding, said a police spokesman. In two cases flags had to be confiscated. The only motorcade that actually took place was a wedding parade. This was also approved. However, the bride and groom were only allowed to continue celebrating with honking after the participants had been informed about the obligation to wear seat belts.

An event scheduled for Saturday afternoon under the motto “Solidarity for Palestine” was canceled by the organizers at short notice, as was a demonstration at Professor-Huber-Platz to “support the people of Israel.” The police were still present on site with a larger contingent. On Saturday evening there was a pro-Palestinian vigil announced at short notice with the motto “Freedom for People” at Odeonsplatz, where, according to police reports, 150 people demonstrated peacefully, accompanied by 120 police officers.

On Thursday, an event initially banned by the city under the motto “Human rights and international law for Palestine too” was approved at short notice by the Administrative Court. This was peaceful. There was also a meeting on Friday between Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter and Muslim clergy because they had expressed their concern about an escalation in Munich. This concern was unfounded, at least this weekend.
