Much more than hot air – Bavaria

Even if the winter is weak at the moment and the whole of Bavaria is spared from freezing temperatures, there is still an uncomfortable freshness in an unheated apartment. In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that people were freezing in their homes. Even in the 1960s, many houses were cold, drafty and damp. Even in the middle of Munich there were still many buildings without hot water, without central heating and without bathrooms. Most of the time there was just a small stove in a corner that was heated with coals, and all too often the kitchen was full of smoke that couldn’t escape because of the wind.
