In 2023, the glamorous awards ceremony was canceled at short notice. The MTV European Music Awards will take place in Manchester in 2024.

The European Music Awards will be held at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena on November 10th. According to “Variety” magazine, the broadcaster has now confirmed this date. The awards ceremony in Manchester not only marks the 30th anniversary of the awards. After a forced break of one year, the EMAs in Manchester are returning to the European show stage. The MTV EMAs are one of the largest global music events. They regularly attract the biggest music stars in the world. The EMAs are also considered the European counterpart of the US Video Music Awards (VMAs).

Cancellation 2023 due to war

The award to Manchester makes the industrial, football and music city in the northwest of England the direct successor to the NRW state capital Düsseldorf. The music prizes were awarded there in 2022. Last year’s EMA awards were scheduled to take place in Paris on November 5, 2023, but fell victim to a last-minute cancellation. The reason: After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, the organizers had security concerns. They therefore canceled the event, which was broadcast worldwide, “out of caution”. Due to the military conflict between Israel and Hamas, a number of terrorist incidents occurred in France. A knife attack and bomb threats at airports put Germany’s neighbors on high alert.

Düsseldorf 2022 dominated by Taylor Swift

The show is scheduled to take place again in 2024. This puts Manchester in competition with the spectacular super show in Düsseldorf 2022. The uncrowned queen of the music world Taylor Swift (34) made Düsseldorf her event back then. Two years ago she took home four awards. The event was moderated by, among others, UK singing star Rita Ora (33). Her predecessors at previous EMAs are Tom Jones, Robbie Williams, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Heidi Klum. The German EMA award winners include the groups Die Ärzte and Silbermond as well as Lena Meyer-Landrut and Tim Bendzko.

150 countries and three channels broadcast

It has not yet been decided who will host the EMAs on November 10th in Manchester’s new magnificent arena. What is clear, however, is that the prize is returning to the British island after a seven-year tour of Europe. Manchester is celebrating its premiere as EMA host and is already in a state of anticipation. Bev Craig, the chairwoman of the local city council, says in the “Manchester Evening News“: “As a city known worldwide for its legendary music scene, MTV couldn’t have chosen a better location for this year’s EMAs.” In addition to broadcasting on MTV in over 150 countries, the EMAs can also be seen on Pluto TV and Paramount+.
