MP calls for investigation after wave of prison suicides

The Nantes prison is in turmoil. Since May, the penitentiary establishment has been facing a worrying wave of suicides with four inmates who have killed themselves. Last week, two suicides were recorded in three days in the remand center which houses 788 prisoners for 573 places.

Following these dramas, the deputy of Loire-Atlantique Ségolène Amiot (Nupes) has just sent a letter to the Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti to alert him to “this unbearable wave of suicides”.

“Analyze the causes of these suicides”

In her written question, the MP also calls for the opening of an investigation by the General Inspectorate of Justice to “analyze as soon as possible the causes of these repeated suicides” and “that adequate and effective measures are taken in account immediately.

“This is about the survival of fellow citizens detained, in Nantes as everywhere in France, she writes. With the aim that this investigation also sets a precedent and that others are carried out throughout France and overseas”. According the Twitter account @desdetenus53 prisoners have committed suicide in prison since the beginning of the year in France.
