The famous Golden Globe Awards have been presented since 1904. After severe criticism, they are now being restructured – and diversity also plays a major role in this.

Change at the Golden Globe Awards: The film awards presented by Hollywood-based foreign journalists since the 1940s are to be restructured. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced that the organization’s members had voted in favor of a new business model.

Accordingly, the investment firm Eldridge Industries will run the Golden Globe Awards as a private for-profit organization, while the HFPA association will continue its philanthropic work with donations to charitable causes as a so-called non-profit organization.

HFPA Chair Helen Hoehne said it was a “historic moment” for the HFPA and the Golden Globes. As part of the restructuring, the pool of Golden Globe jurors is also to be further expanded and more diverse.

criticism of the organization

The organization came under pressure last year mainly because of questionable practices, allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity. At the time, there was not a single black member on the panel of almost 100 journalists. Many stars criticized heavily, companies suspended the cooperation. The broadcaster NBC canceled the traditional TV broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards for January 2022. Nominees stayed away from the event, the names of the winners were only announced via the social media accounts of the Association of Foreign Press.

The small association announced efforts to increase transparency and change last year. Reforms have hired a diversity consultant, elected a new board, and expanded and diversified membership. The HFPA will continue to pursue these goals, it said in a statement on Thursday. They look forward to celebrating their 80th anniversary in January 2023, Helen Hoehne said.

Nothing is known about the format of the Golden Globe Awards next year. The in-house broadcaster NBC has not yet commented on a TV broadcast of the prize gala.
