Mourning: Why cemeteries have to change – Starnberg

from

Caroline Fries

The living come and go, the dead stay. That’s how it is in the cemetery. But does that mean the tombs have to be designed in a dreary and sad way? Framed by high hedges, embedded in a mix of evergreens and interspersed with mighty conifers that create a mossy, dull atmosphere. Why is it that hardly a tree blooms in many cemeteries, why do no tulips stretch their flower heads towards the sun? “Isn’t it much nicer to see a ray of hope in the moment of grief?” Asks Martin Karl.
