A 42-year-old climber fell and died on the east face of the Watzmann in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The rope team from the Czech Republic climbed the wall on Friday morning, the police said on Saturday evening.
The two men are said to have climbed at an altitude of almost 1,900 meters, in the so-called ramp of the mountain near Schönau am Königssee. Just when they were back on the right path, the leader fell for reasons that were initially unknown. According to the information, his companion put the rope around a rock head, thereby preventing the entire rope team from falling.
He was able to hold on to his leader, who had fallen 60 to 80 meters into steep rocky terrain. However, the man suffered serious head injuries in the accident.
The Berchtesgaden mountain rescue service, which arrived at the scene of the accident with a rescue helicopter from Austria that was capable of flying at night due to the onset of darkness, was only able to determine the death of the 42-year-old man.
The rescue of the crashed person was postponed until the next morning due to the danger to everyone involved. According to the police, the companion was flown out and looked after by the mountain rescue crisis intervention team.
