The hope was in vain: mountaineer Luis Stitzinger was found dead several days after his disappearance in the Himalayas.

The well-known German mountaineer Luis Stitzinger is dead. The body of the 54-year-old from Füssen (Bavaria) was discovered by search teams on Kangchenjunga (Nepal/India), the third highest mountain in the world, in the Himalayas. This was confirmed by the Nepalese authorities of the DPA news agency on Tuesday evening.

“Luis Stitzinger was found dead at 8,400 meters and his body is being taken to the lower camps,” a representative of the expedition company Seven Summit Treks told Nepal’s capital Kathmandu newspaper The Himalayan Times.

Luis Stitzinger has been missing in the Himalayas for days

Stitzinger was on his own and without oxygen equipment on the mountain. After reaching the 8586 meter high summit, he was last seen descending last Thursday. Contact with him broke off, since then he has been missing (the star reported).

Several rescue teams were dispatched to find the climber, according to Seven Summit Treks, but bad weather initially prevented the search and also the ascent of helicopters.

The Allgäu was considered an experienced and level-headed mountaineer. According to his own statements, he has already skied on seven eight-thousanders and was sometimes accompanied by his wife Alix von Melle.

Together they published the book “Passion for Life: Together on the highest mountains in the world”. The description of the book says: “Luis felt at home in the mountains even as a child; the experienced mountain guide and expedition leader crowns ascents with spectacular ski descents. Worrying about each other often puts relationships to the test.”
