Mountain tour with public transport? Currently a disaster – Munich

FC Bayern Munich and the Munich and Oberland double section of the German Alpine Club (DAV) are the largest clubs in this sports-loving city. Both of them have in common that it takes a little while to fulfill their heart’s desires. In the case of FCB: score goals. In the case of DAV: leave the car behind and take the train and bus to the mountains. In almost every broadcast, the Alpenverein encourages its 180,000 Munich members to use local public transport with colorful diagrams. Alone, it doesn’t work.

Not even Tuchel knows what’s wrong with Bayern. But the DAV can deny any guilt. The mountain buses he initiated are a fine thing. Unfortunately, they can’t go everywhere and they can’t take 100,000 people with them. Which means that the potentially sustainable Munich mountaineer is dependent on various railway companies and local bus lines. Of course, this has disastrous consequences for the hoped-for day on the mountain in perfect weather, as a self-experiment shows.

Twelve hours away from home, almost four hours of which on the mountain. The big rest: bus, train, alternative transport, train station, bus stop, killing time. The goal: not the distant Dolomites – but the Alpspitze, a mountain almost on the doorstep. The day in a nutshell: Instead of the bus, the MVG emergency vehicle comes first. train just reached. Destination Weilheim, then change to the rail replacement bus service. Due to an accident, he drives through the villages. And it is called that because rails always have to be replaced somewhere in the Oberland, currently on three routes. It is not a substitute for a train journey, because the planned shuttle train did not wait when it arrived in Murnau, but left almost empty. The next leaves in less than an hour – at walking pace. Because of the rails.

The tourist resort of Garmisch does not like to take its visitors directly to the cable car. City tour every hour. running is faster. The ascent can begin at twelve o’clock sharp. Then the same thing on the way back. Waiting, Garmisch circuit, train gone, waiting again, replacement service completely overcrowded, connecting train as well. The final bus to your own front door is cancelled. staff shortage. Next time, sorry, dear DAV, despite all good intentions: again by car.
