Mountain bike park in the Fichtelgebirge stopped for the time being – Bavaria

The plans for a mountain bike park on the Großer Kornberg in the Fichtelgebirge are on hold for the time being. The State Association for the Protection of Birds (LBV) was successful with an urgent application before the administrative court in Bayreuth. The building permit notice from the Wunsiedel District Office was “not sufficiently specific in essential points,” the court said on Tuesday. Now the main proceedings follow in the legal dispute.

The documents submitted did not contain an operating concept that adequately describes the use of the park. Therefore, it cannot be conclusively assessed whether the project is permissible. The building permit is thus already unlawful from a formal point of view, the chamber justified its decision. After the first examination as part of the urgent application, however, the court also found that there were no fundamental legal objections to the project itself: the effects on flora and fauna had been recorded, and the impairments to nature and landscape were sufficiently compensated.

The special purpose association, in which the districts of Hof and Wunsiedel are organized, is planning a mountain bike park with various routes on the Kornberg on around 22 hectares. A ski lift has already been installed there, and the Kornberghaus with gastronomic offerings was recently opened. The LBV is heavily critical of the plans for the mountain bike park. For example, it was not checked in advance whether the habitat of capercaillie, white-backed woodpecker and various owl species would deteriorate as a result of the construction.
