Mother and child caught by ICE – woman dead

Major operation at Berlin Central Station: Early Wednesday evening, passengers witnessed a terrible incident in which a woman died and her child suffered life-threatening injuries. According to initial police findings, the two were on the tracks. Police and firefighters received clear indications from witnesses that the woman wanted to take her own life. However, the analysis of surveillance videos could take until the next day, it was said.

Mother and child were hit by an incoming ICE train on platform 13. Shortly afterwards, at 6:20 p.m., several emergency calls were received by the Berlin fire department. Almost 20 minutes later, a rescue helicopter landed on the forecourt of the station. But help came too late for the woman. An emergency doctor could only confirm her death, said a fire department spokesman. The child was simultaneously taken in an ambulance to the nearest hospital, where it requires intensive medical care. According to the police, it is a small child. An investigation into the death has been initiated.

At Deutsche Bahn, long-distance traffic was particularly affected. It was said that train traffic between Spandau, the main station and the Ostbahnhof was particularly affected. At around 9.30 p.m. the railway announced on Twitter that the route had been reopened.
