9:33 a.m .: Nobel Prize Dmitri Muratov, a “foreign agent” according to Moscow

Russia on Friday put the editor of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, co-winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Dmitry Muratov, on its list of “foreign agents”, a label used to stifle criticism.

The Russian Justice Ministry said that Dmitry Muratov had “used foreign platforms to spread opinions aimed at forming a negative attitude towards the foreign and domestic policy of the Russian Federation”.

This status, which recalls the term “enemy of the people” from the Stalinist era, imposes administrative constraints on the persons or entities targeted, including regular monitoring of their sources of funding. It also imposes to accompany any publication, including on social networks, of the label “foreign agent”.
